Perspectives

Accelerated Presentation
by Richard Buse
The presentation phase of
Accelerated Learning engages learners and prompts them to apply new
perspectives to work-related tasks and issues. At the June Accelerated Learning
SIG, facilitator Jean Scudder provided an example of effective presentation as
she asked participants to explain how seed packages for various flowers could relate
to their training efforts. Ideas offered by participants included:
Time of day: Four-o’clocks, a type of flower, open and bloom late
in the afternoon. Do learners’ work efforts and levels of performance fluctuate,
too, based on the time of day?
Bilingual messages: A
particular type of flower blooms in many colors. An effective message likewise
retains its meaning and impact when delivered in numerous languages.
Diverse perspectives and responsibilities: When combined properly, different types of flowers
provide a beautiful setting. In an organization, different individuals likewise
blend and contribute disparate perspectives and talents.
Unaddressed problems: A weed or other unwanted plant starts out as a
tiny seed. As it grows, it becomes increasingly troublesome. The same
difficulty arises in organizations when small problems are left unaddressed.
In
addition to relating organizational issues to gardening, Scudder and
participants discussed a variety of other techniques trainers can use to
effectively present topics in ways that enhance learning and retention.
