August: A Time for Learning

by Jay Maxwell, President

August is the month in the Dallas area when schoolchildren again turn to learning.  August is also the month when area workplace learning professionals have a tremendous opportunity to continue down their own learning paths, increasing knowledge, building networks, and setting a course for personal and business growth.  This month, Dallas ASTD delivers value to members and other DFW professionals by offering two career building events.

First, on Thursday, August 17 at the Addison Conference Centre, Dallas ASTD will host the Southwest Learning Summit and Exposition, an entire day focused on topics and resources to help you deliver more effective learning solutions to your colleagues and clients.

At the luncheon program, Tom Whittaker, will discuss how courage, passion, and persistence determine attainment of even the most challenging goals.  For no extra charge, program registrants can attend up to three additional presentations, two in the morning and one in the afternoon.  And in the vendor area, experts on learning related topics will be available to discuss business and university options that can help you increase the scope of tools you offer to the workplace.

Second, on Tuesday, August 22 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, Dallas ASTD will host another terrific Networking Event at the Blue Mesa Grill in Addison, this time combined with the chapter’s Leadership Night.

Long time ASTD members know the importance of building relationships outside of one’s usual circle of colleagues and contacts.   The chapter’s networking events, with free admission for members, provide an enjoyable venue in which to meet professionals, exchange ideas about effective training, and catch up on the latest news in the Dallas learning landscape.

Your active participation in the chapter is probably the single best way to build professional value for yourself through Dallas ASTD, while having fun and getting to know others!  The annual Leadership Night is a time to discover how you can become a committee member, committee leader, or chapter officer.  Chapter involvement provides opportunities for you to do more of what you already do well – or get involved in skill building activities that may not be available to you in the workplace.

Don’t miss out on August events where you can help yourself learn, grow, and succeed!  I hope to see you at both the Addison Conference Centre and the Blue Mesa Grill!
